Rent Receipt Template

A rent receipt proves a tenant paid. Fill in the details below and download the PDF to give to them.

What a rent receipt should say

  • The date the rent was received
  • The tenant's name and the property address
  • The period the payment covers, such as the month of March
  • The amount paid and how (cash, transfer, cheque)
  • The landlord's name, and a signature and receipt number as good practice

Fill it in

  1. Put the landlord's details in From and the tenant's in Bill to.
  2. Add one line: Rent for the month, with the amount.
  3. Add a deposit or any other payment as a separate line.
  4. Download the PDF and give or send it.

Keeping a record

Number each receipt in order and keep a copy. A tenant who pays in cash will often ask for one every time. If rent is paid late, the receipt shows the date it actually arrived. For handwritten receipts, read how to fill out a receipt book. Want Word? See the Microsoft Word receipt template.

Questions

Does a landlord have to give a rent receipt?
In some places the law says so, especially for cash. Even where it does not, a receipt protects both sides. Tenants may also need receipts to prove rent paid for a tax or housing-benefit claim; check what your authority accepts.
Can a tenant make their own rent receipt?
Anyone can fill in the form, but a receipt is only worth something once the landlord confirms it. Have the landlord sign it.
