Receipt for Vehicle Sale
A receipt for a vehicle sale records who paid how much for which vehicle. It is not a title transfer. Fill it in below and download the PDF.
What to put on it
- Make, model, year and colour of the vehicle
- The vehicle identification number (VIN), where it is usually recorded
- The odometer reading at sale, which is commonly recorded
- Buyer's and seller's names and addresses
- The price, the date and how it was paid
- A line saying whether it was sold as is, where the law allows that
A receipt is not a transfer
Changing the owner of a vehicle is done through your local registration office, with its own forms and rules. This receipt is a record of the payment and of what was sold. Check what your local office needs.
Questions
- Does this replace a bill of sale?
- Not always. In some places a signed record naming the vehicle, the price and both parties works as a bill of sale. Others require a specific form or a notary. Check with your motor vehicle office.
- Should both sides sign?
- It is a good idea. Each keeps a copy.
