Sales Receipt Template
A sales receipt records a sale that was paid for at the time. Fill it in below and give the customer a copy.
What a sales receipt shows
- The date and a receipt number
- The seller's name and contact
- Each item or service, with quantity and price
- Tax, shown on its own line
- The total paid and how it was paid
Sales receipt or invoice?
If the customer pays when they buy, a receipt is the document. If payment comes later, send an invoice first. See invoice vs receipt.
Questions
- Can I use a sales receipt as an invoice?
- Not usually. It says the payment has been made, so it does not ask for anything. A business customer may still want an invoice.
- Do small sellers need to give receipts?
- Often a customer will ask for one, and some places require them for certain sales. It costs little to provide.
