Statement of work example

By Diljit Ramachandran, founder of The Invoice Generator. Published Oct 26, 2026.

A statement of work (SOW) is a document that sets out the work, deliverables, timeline, price and acceptance for a project. This example shows the parts a SOW usually contains. Copy the structure and replace each part with your own project.

What does a statement of work sample look like?

Example only. Replace every line with your own project:

  • Project: monthly marketing support for Example Client Ltd, for three months.
  • Scope: four blog posts and one email newsletter each month.
  • Deliverables: drafts by the 10th, final copy by the 20th.
  • Milestones: one delivery date each month.
  • Price: 1,500 a month, invoiced on the last day of each month.
  • Acceptance: the client replies within 5 days or the work counts as accepted.
  • Out of scope: design, paid ads and extra posts. Quoted separately.

How do you write a SOW?

Start from the structure above. The statement of work guide explains each part. Keep the scope specific, so each milestone can be checked, and attach it to your contract if you have one.

What is the difference between a SOW and a scope of work?

The scope of work is the part that lists what will be done. The SOW is the whole document, which also holds deliverables, timeline, price and acceptance.

How does the SOW turn into invoices?

Each delivery becomes an invoice. For this example, one invoice for 1,500 at the end of each month. See progress billing, and make each bill with the free invoice template.
