Net 60 payment terms: what they mean

By Diljit Ramachandran, founder of The Invoice Generator. Published Oct 26, 2026.

Net 60 means the full invoice is due 60 days after the invoice date. An invoice dated 1 March is due on 30 April, about two months later. That helps the client's cash flow and delays yours. Write Net 60 and the exact due date on the invoice.

How do Net 60 terms compare with Net 30 and Net 90?

Count the days from the invoice date, not from delivery or receipt, unless your contract says so. What to put on an invoice covers the due date. Here is an invoice dated 1 March:

TermsDue dateDiscount common?
Net 1516 MarchRare
Net 3031 MarchSometimes
Net 6030 AprilOften 2/10
Net 9030 MayRare

What does 2/10 net 60 mean?

It is a discount for paying early. On a 1,000 invoice dated 1 March, the client takes 20 off if they pay by 11 March; otherwise the full 1,000 is due 30 April. As a calculation, paying 50 days early for 2 percent is worth about 15 percent a year to the client, so offer it only if you can afford it.

When should you offer Net 60?

Some large clients have a fixed payment cycle and may ask for Net 60. Many freelancers and small businesses use Net 14 or Net 30; see payment terms explained. The seller waits longer and carries the cost; the buyer keeps cash for longer. If you must offer Net 60, ask for a deposit or invoice in stages. Some places limit long payment terms, so check yours.

Questions

Is Net 60 the same as 60 days after receipt?
Not always. Net terms normally run from the invoice date. If a client counts from the day they receive it, say so in the contract.
Can I add a late fee to Net 60?
Yes, if the client agreed to it up front, for example in the contract or quote, and you print it on the invoice. Rules on late fees vary; see late payment fees.
