Markup and margin calculator

Enter what something costs you and the markup you want to see the price to charge, your profit and your margin.

Answer

Enter your cost to see the answer.

How it works

Markup is a share of the cost: price = cost + cost x markup / 100.

Margin is a share of the price: margin = profit / price x 100. A 50% markup gives a margin of about 33%, which is why the two are often confused.

Questions

What is the difference between markup and margin?
Markup is profit as a share of cost. Margin is profit as a share of the price. The same sale has a smaller margin than markup.
How much markup should I add?
That depends on your costs, your market and what the work is worth to the customer. The calculator only does the arithmetic.
