Free Credit Note Generator
A credit note reduces what a customer owes, or records a refund, and points back to the invoice it adjusts. Fill it in and download the PDF. Nothing is sent to us.
How to make one
- Add your details and the customer's.
- Put the number and date of the invoice you are adjusting in the Original invoice box.
- List what is being credited, with quantity and amount.
- Add the tax adjustment if tax was charged, then download the PDF.
When to use one
Issue a credit note when an invoice needs correcting after it was sent: a return, a pricing mistake, or a discount agreed afterwards.
Not sure which you need? Invoice, receipt, quote and estimate: the difference.
What to include
- A credit note number
- The number and date of the invoice it adjusts
- What is being credited and why
- The amount credited, with any tax adjustment
- Whether it is refunded or kept as credit against later invoices
Questions
- Can I edit the invoice instead of issuing a credit note?
- That depends on whether the invoice has been sent and on the rules where you are. Many people issue a credit note so that both documents stay on record. Check the requirements where you work.
- Is a credit note the same as a refund?
- No. A credit note records the reduction. A refund is the money going back. A credit note can be settled as a refund or kept as credit against later invoices.
